Services

The Learning Environments team delivers three key services to UNSW staff and students.

AV and technical support

Learning Environments has a dedicated technical support team who manage AV systems across all centrally allocated teaching spaces (CATS). The AV team is responsible for maintaining computers, projectors, automatic lighting, speakers and lecture recording equipment. They provide support relating to AV equipment and services, respond to maintenance requests and work closely with other service providers on campus to develop and deliver a seamless experience for all users.

Scheduling – timetabling and bookings

Our team oversees the development and management of UNSW’s central teaching timetable. We liaise with Schools and Faculties to produce a timetable that balances student and staff requirements, and we allocate rooms that provide the space, technology and infrastructure required for each class. We also aim to schedule classes in a way that maximises flexibility and enables seamless progression for every student across every course.

We also look after casual bookings, irregular classes and courses that aren’t on the central timetable. Our team manages the booking, allocation and scheduling into centrally allocated teaching spaces (CATS) for organisations and units such as Arc@UNSW and Foundation Studies. We oversee up to 15,000 casual bookings every year.

Planning and development of UNSW learning environments

Learning Environments investment planning

The Learning Environments team works collaboratively across UNSW to manage ongoing investment and development in UNSW learning environments and supporting services. Our approach is guided by input from students, staff, Faculty and service areas. It is informed by changing trends in learning and teaching practice, and in campus and digital design. Our goal is to work closely with teaching staff and students to develop learning environments and services that are aligned with current and projected need.

Understanding needs

Our Learning Environments Design Advisory Group is focussed on engagement with Faculty and School staff and liaison with learning and teaching and IT service providers. A Learning Environments Project is also underway. The Project aims to understand the needs of students and staff, and will review the way the University plans, designs and supports its learning environments in order to improve the student experience.

Room refurbishments and renovations

Designing and delivering world-leading learning and teaching spaces is a core component of our business. Our team works with staff and students on design principles and standards, to inform the projects we deliver. We also work closely with Faculties and Schools to plan each renovation, managing the logistics in partnership with the Facilities Management unit and other key service providers. The upgraded facilities resulting from our projects play an important role in improving the learning and teaching experience at UNSW.
